Our Commitment & Financial Support

Financial Support

Each resident receives between $50 -$100 per family for assistance. The amount depends on the size and need of each family. We also pay the last $50-$100 that is needed on a bill, which ensures that our money will not be wasted (i.e., the electricity is still shut-off) and also empowers each client to be responsible for the acquiring the balance due.

Payments are made directly to vendors such as: Seattle City Light, Seattle Public Utilities, Puget Sound Energy, Sound Oil, Management Companies, Bartell Drug Company, Seattle Housing Association, and Highpoint Management to name a few.

All of the Helpline volunteers are trained to assist and access the needs of our callers. In order to combat dependency on social services and promote self-sufficiency, we limit the availability of our financial assistance to each family while at the same time giving each family access to a vast array of referral services. The West Seattle Helpline works closely with other social service agencies enabling clients to benefit from "wrap-around" service.

 Self-Sufficiency

Our ultimate goal is self-sufficiency and with the help of other service providers we are more often than not, able to accomplish this goal.

Many clients can become dependent on the generosity of social service agencies to meet their basic needs. So in order to ward off dependency and empower  self-sufficiency, we spend time talking with clients who we notice have used our services for several years in a row and work with these clients to find out how we can help them move towards self-sufficiency. This is not always easy, for some of our callers have used the social service system for many years. But our volunteers are relentless with compassion and talk with each person about the challenges in their life. We encourage education and will help them financially with school or job training or refer them to career development opportunities.
